Having been working on this room since the start of July, I’m so excited to be able to share my Californian-inspired home office makeover. I wrote a post to showcase my inspiration and moodboard and if you take a look here, you can see it’s pretty much come together exactly how I wanted it to.
The room itself pre-makeover wasn’t a bad space – it was once even featured in Style at Home Magazine as a spare-room-come-office makeover. But once I’d decided to work for myself, I didn’t want to feel like I was working in my “spare room”. I wanted to create a dedicated design office, where I could blog, create interior schemes and write my monthly magazine.
Out came the built-in wardrobes and bed and in their place was a fairly large blank canvas. Before I started to design the room itself, I knew I wanted to create a gallery wall of Coast to Coast images from Desenio, which I’d fallen in love with months ago. Coast to Coast is one of the latest collections from the Scandinavian print company, which includes photography from Miami, California and Palm Springs, including this iconic pink front door print. The bold and fun colour palette was everything I wanted for this space, especially as I was painting the walls white in agreement with my landlord.
All these prints, including frames, came to less than £200, which I think it’s very well priced considering the high-quality products. I’ve been lucky enough to team up with Desenio to offer readers a discount. The code APTNO4 gives 25% off posters* on all the brand’s sites between August 14th and 16th 2018 *except for frames and handpicked/collaboration posters. This way you can grab a slice of the west coast yourself.
If you’re wondering how I persuaded my landlord to let me wallpaper, here’s my secret. Well, one, I didn’t tell him. And two, this amazing wallpaper from Deco Chic is completely removable. Yes, that’s right. When I move out, all I need to do is peel it away from the wall. Genuinely, it was the easiest thing to apply, and I was doing it by myself. The first step is to measure the walls, then you order the correct amount (I had some left over for emergencies). Mine arrived within a week as it’s shipped directly from Italy, and all I needed to do was apply singular strips to the wall. I’m sure you’ll agree with how much of a statement it makes.
There are certain pieces that really tie this room together and the first has to be my gorgeous Colette floor lamp from Made.com. This has sold out at the moment, but if you’re interested you can be notified when it arrives back. There’s also a brass version which is equally as stunning if you ask me.
You might have seen on twitter how overjoyed I was when I discovered this LaRedoute rug, as it was the final piece to the puzzle. I couldn’t believe I’d managed to find a rug which pulled together my complete colour palette in one, from pink to mustard to mint, blue and cream. It has a rough woven quality to it, which I love, and I used it to create a “zone” within the room to define my working space. The Ankara flat weave kilim wool rug is £169.00, but the brand has an offer on at the moment for 25% off with the promo code save25.
I’m just so much more productive in this space now, instead of feeling like I was working in my spare bedroom. Because I work on various projects through the day, I wanted a desk long enough to be able to spread paperwork out etc. This Ikea number was perfect. The Linnmon table top is 2 meters long and costs £26.50, while the Finnvard trestle legs are £25.00 each. I wanted natural wood throughout the space, which is why I also decided against painting or staining my Tarva chest of drawers. I did, however, update them with new porcelain handles from Homesense.
Nearly everything in this room has been bought or been gifted brand new, so I’ve made a list in case anything catches your eye. If it was gifted, it will have a c/o in front of the product.
