When you first set out to decorate your new home, style is usually at the forefront of your mind, but you don’t want
your place of rest and relaxation to seem like a show-home with no personality. If you’re looking for clever ways to add a touch of character to your space, here are my top tips.

Put your travels on display

One way off putting some of your soul into your surroundings is to put all those artworks or trinkets that you’ve collected on your travels, on display. Whether it’s a colourful rug bought from some exotic market, or wooden statues that have been carved right in front of you. These are always great conversation points when guests come around too, as they’ll all want to know where you got things from and you can start talking about your time spent in different countries. (Image Credit)

Up-cycled furniture

This is the ideal way of adding individuality to your home, because whatever you choose to upcycle, you know there isn’t another in the world like it. It could be re-upholstering an old armchair with a jazzy new print to brighten up a dull room. Or instead, how about adding some retro charm to your bedroom by restoring a dark vintage wardrobe with a new lick of paint? However, if you’re nervous about taking on some of the bigger pieces yourself, there are plenty of businesses around that will take care of it for you – just do a search in your local area.  Personalised wall art

When people think of putting their family photographs on display, their vision is often very limited. They restrict themselves to simply basic photographs put in a frame on a mantle-piece. But this is far from true these days! Companies like Hello Canvas have a huge range of materials that you can use for printing photographs on. It could be that you have your favourite landscape image, that you took yourself, put onto a large canvas to be mounted onto your living room wall. Or, if you’ve gone for a rustic theme I your home with lots of earthen materials, you can even get your photographs printed onto wood. Be creative with you photographs, and opt for something a little out of the ordinary. (Image Credit)

 A splash of colour

Nothing says more about your personality than your favourite colour, but there are ways of adding it to your home so that it’s not over-bearing for the person walking into the room. For example, if you’re passionate about yellow or orange, brighten up a plain coloured lounge with accents of these tones. Whether it’s a vase of flowers, a vibrant, over-sized piece of artwork, or the colour of the fabric on your dining room chairs. In the bathroom, you could change the colour of the blinds, the towels or the ornaments. (Image Credit)
